Michaela's Mutterings - Jan 2011

Hello everyone

As you might be aware I have been painting a cottage garden mural in the lobby of Valley Views at our Valley Lodge Care Home. Well apart from the protective varnish coats I’m finished. It has been a mammoth project but one I have absolutely loved doing.

I have had lots of help from the residents, some who joined me just for a chat and to watch, others, with some experience gave advice and comments on my work. One gentleman in particular has proved to be a very experienced and knowledgeable artist himself, and I believe I have learnt much from his generosity of knowledge and his informed critiques of each wall as it was finished.

This photo shows one of the residents who have been enjoying the murals, my companion throughout the process, Mavis. Mavis and I are in front of one of her favourite paintings “the red hollyhock”. Mavis has been a big help in assisting with colour choices, artistic content and keeping me company over a cuppa on my breaks.

Residents are now using the entrance lobby of Valley Views for many different activities, where before it was simply a space to pass through. Residents regularly can be found pouring over a jigsaw, some play a game here or use it as somewhere quiet to sit and contemplate or drink coffee with their visitors.
