the Derwent Wing opened by the Dowager Duchess

The new Derwent Wing of Valley Lodge Care Home on Bakewell Road, Matlock was opened by the Dowager Duchess of Devonshire on Monday. The Dowager Duchess cut the ribbon to officially open the wing before talking to some of the residents, guests and the management team.

the final push

Thanks to a typically wet British summer work on the roof has been pushed back but now with all the tiles on the scaffolding can finally come down letting us see the new Derwent Wing. Most of the equipment off site means work can start landscaping the courtyard which will become the focal point of Valley Lodge.

starting the internal works

With the roof starting to go on and windows in its time to get the internals sorted. It doesn't take long for the internal stud walls to go up giving the electricians and plumbers something to work to.

In no time at all plasterboard is going on and rooms begin to form at an ever increasing pace.

walls up & first floor laid

Having spent such a long time and effort 'in the ground' on this project once the building reached ground floor level things have really picked up pace! Thanks to the design of the Derwent Wing there is no need for load bearing internal walls meaning once the outside walls are up the first floor beams can go on.

the building begins to take shape

It's now finally time to begin laying the block work and stone that will form the Derwent wing. Due to the differing levels on site the first thing to be build is effectively a large under croft which will act to level the site.

Next the large concrete beams are craned into position to form the ground floor of the building. These huge beams...

building the raft

Once all of the piles are in place trenches are dug out linking each pile and forming the floor layout of the Derwent Wing.

Every trench is lined with a steel re-enforcing latticework which is made by hand on site. This latticework helps strengthen the concrete which will span from pile to pile taking the load of the building.

If you...
