Social isolation can seriously harm older Deaf adults in hearing care homes. Therefore, we work hard to reduce this impact. We actively support our residents’ wellbeing by creating a culturally aware and communication-accessible environment. Moreover, we recognise and respect the cultural identity of Deaf residents through daily use of British Sign Language (BSL). We also bridge the gap between Devonshire and the wider Deaf Community to strengthen connection and inclusion. All staff either use BSL fluently or hold, at minimum, a Level 2 qualification—or are currently working toward it.

We believe community is at the heart of quality care—especially for our Deaf and hard of hearing residents. That’s why we actively engage with local Deaf clubs and organisations, helping residents stay socially connected and culturally involved. In addition, we proudly host our own monthly BSL Coffee Morning, creating a welcoming space for residents, families, and the wider Deaf community to come together. These regular events help strengthen relationships, reduce isolation, and celebrate Deaf identity in a supportive, inclusive environment.
